Agrasen ki baoli also known as Ugrasen ki Baoli is a step well which is 60 meter long and 15 meter wide, on Hailey road near Connaught Place, New Delhi. Archaeological Survey of India has designated the Baoli, as a protected monument. Although there are no known historical records to prove who built the Baoli but it is believed that it was originally built by King Agrasen.
It was made to provide constant water supply to the city and was also considered as the best place for travellers to take shade for a while. Its structure is quite different from what we see in other step wells. The visible part of this historical step well consist of three levels with 108 steps in it. Each level is lined with arched niches on both sides.
Enumerated in India’s Top most haunted place, Agrasen ki baoli many haunted suicidal stories. It is said that the ‘black water’ entices people to commit suicide by jumping into it. Though, nowadays, the baoli remains almost water less. When you walk down to the bottom you’ll hear the ruckus created by hundreds of bats present there. The last incident took place was in 2007.
It is a 14th century structure nested in between the multi-storey buildings of Connaught place, New Delhi, and spring up after getting featured in Amir Khan’s film ‘PK’. It was basically hidden over decades and thanks to Bollywood that it came to light again. After PK, it was then featured in Salam khan’s Movie ‘Sultan’ too. It was even been there in Preity Zinta and Abhishek Bachan Starer Jhoom Barabar Jhoom.
